10 Ways to Stay Awake in Class

Do you have a really hard time staying awake in class? Half-way through class do your eyes start to droop and your notes get small and illegible? Join the club. Over the years, I’ve learned a few ways to stay awake in class (they are not foolproof).

1. Caffeinate. If you’re someone who never gets enough sleep (aka all college students ever), caffeine can be your best friend. Drink coffee, black tea, soda, whatever gets you the fix you need to stay awake.

2. Drink water. I don’t know the exact science behind it, but being hydrated makes you less tired and lethargic, which is super helpful in those long boring classes you have.

3. Chew gum. Chewing gum makes you move your mouth, which can sometimes wake you up.

4. Doodle.

5. Write notes to the people next to you in your notebook (only if they’re your friends, otherwise it might freak them out).

6. Take a bathroom break. If you feel yourself quickly slipping into sleep, sneak out of class and go to the bathroom. Splash your face with water, do some jumping jacks, walk around the hallway – whatever you need to do to get your blood flowing again.

7. Look at your upcoming assignments. Write them into a planner or just mentally take note of what you have coming up.

8. Write snail mail to people in other places. Whether you have friends and family in other cities or other countries, take a minute to write them a letter – they’ll love it and it’ll keep you distracted enough to not fall asleep.

9. Participate in discussion. If your class allows for you to talk, speak up. It’ll give you enough of an adrenaline rush (making coherent thoughts come out is hard) to get your blood pumping to your brain again.

10. Make lists: party themes, places you want to travel, recipes to make, costume ideas, baby names, groceries you need to buy, to-do lists, Yik Yaks to post later, jobs you want to have some day, etc.
